There are ten different Medicare Supplement plans to choose from, but only a few offer comprehensive coverage: Plans C, F, G, and N.
Plan C
Plan C is one of the most comprehensive supplement plans as it covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency and 100% of:
- Part A Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance/Copayment
- Part A Deductible
- Part B Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- Part B Deductible
- First Three Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- Skilled Nursing Care Facility Coinsurance
However, it does not cover Part B excess charges.
Because of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization legislation, Plan C is no longer available to those who were not eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. This is because Plan C covers the Medicare Part B deductible, which is prohibited by this legislation.
Plan F
Plan F is the only plan that provides coverage for everything. It covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency and 100% of:
- Part A Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance/Copayment
- Part A Deductible
- Part B Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- Part B Deductible
- Part B Excess Charges
- First Three Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- Skilled Nursing Care Facility Coinsurance
Like Plan C, Plan F is no longer available to those who were not eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, because it covers the Part B deductible.
Plan G
If you are not eligible for Plans C or F, Plan G still provides a vast amount of coverage. However, it does not cover the Part B deductible. It covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency and 100% of:
- Part A Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance/Copayment
- Part A Deductible
- Part B Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- Part B Excess Charges
- First Three Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- Skilled Nursing Care Facility Coinsurance
Plan N
Plan N is a close second to Plan G as it covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency and 100% of:
- Part A Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance/Copayment
- Part A Deductible
- Part B Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- First Three Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- Skilled Nursing Care Facility Coinsurance
Plan N does not cover the Part B deductible or excess charges.
