Medigap Plan G

In terms of popularity, Medigap Plan G is second on the list (behind Plan F). Everyone knows about Plan F, but what makes Plan G attractive?

Well, Plan G coverage is quite similar to Plan F. It offers tremendous value to those willing to pay a small annual deductible. Beyond that, Medigap Plan G provides complete coverage for each of the gaps in Medicare. It covers your hospital deductible, copays, and coinsurance, plus the 20% that Part B doesn’t cover.

Medigap Plan G Benefits

Medicare Supplement Plan G covers nearly everything that Plan F does, minus the Part B deductible ($198 in 2020).

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted)
  • Medicare Part B copayment
  • First 3 pints of blood
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Part A hospice care copayment
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B excess charges
  • Foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits)

Plan G Coverage for Medical Services

Medigap Plan G covers your portion of any medical benefit that’s covered by Original Medicare, minus the outpatient deductible. It helps pay for many inpatient hospital costs, including skilled nursing, hospice care, and blood transfusions. But Plan G also covers the following outpatient medical services:

  • x-rays
  • lab work
  • surgeries
  • Doctor’s visits
  • ambulance rides
  • diabetes supplies
  • durable medical equipment
  • and much more

Medicare will pay first, then Plan G will pay all the rest once you pay the annual deductible. Additionally, Plan G supplements include up to $50,000 in foreign travel emergency benefits.

Why Should I Consider Medigap Plan G?

In addition to offering lower premiums, Medigap Plan G is a longstanding rate saver. We’ve recently seen Plan G have an increase of 3% (or less) with certain carriers. This is much lower than the rate increases from year to year on Medigap Plan F. Ultimately, you can keep more money in your pocket when you purchase a Plan G policy.

While Plan F technically covers more than G, Plan G is a better value in many states.
