What does Medicare Part B not cover?

What does Medicare Part B not cover?

When it comes to Medicare, there are a lot of things you need to know to make an informed decision. To fully learn about this federal government health insurance program, it is essential to understand what is and isn’t covered by Medicare.

In this article, we’ll discuss medical treatments and services that are not covered by a specific part of Medicare: Medicare Part B

Not Medically Necessary

Part B doesn’t cover healthcare that is not considered to be medically necessary. The plan doesn’t cover most cosmetic surgeries. It also does not cover alternative forms of medical care like homeopathy, acupressure, and acupuncture.

Immunizations and Vaccinations

Medicare Part B doesn’t cover immunizations and vaccinations, such as those you take before traveling abroad. However, there is an exception for emergencies. For instance, immunizations or vaccinations are needed due to exposure to a disease or risk of infection.

Prescription Drugs Taken at Home

Medicare Part B covers drugs you receive as an outpatient at the doctor’s office, clinic, or hospital. Also, Part B doesn’t cover the cost of any non-prescription medicines, supplements, or vitamins, no matter if they help with your medical condition or have been recommended by a doctor.

Eyesight and Hearing Exams, Hearing Aids and Glasses

Medicare Part B doesn’t cover eyesight or hearing examinations, nor does it cover eyeglasses (except for lenses needed following cataract surgery), contact lenses, or hearing aids. However, Medicare beneficiaries whose ears or eyes are affected due to injury or illness are covered by Medicare Part B for any examination and treatment they receive from an eye doctor or other physician.

General Dental Work

Part B doesn’t cover work performed by an oral surgeon or dentist unless a physician performs the dental work. In summary, Medicare Part B only covers dental work only if it is deemed medically necessary.

Long-Term Care

While Part B covers certain home healthcare services, they are usually short-term and restricted to the time it takes you to recover from the condition, injury, or illness. Medicare Part B doesn’t offer the type of long-term healthcare that many seniors need due to frailty.
