Medigap Plans F, G, and N: a Comparison of Coverage

Medigap can make out-of-pocket costs a thing of the past, and this is particularly true of Medigap plans F, G, and N. These are highly sought after, and once you read on, it’s easy to see why.

Getting Medigap

Medigap is a supplemental policy made up of ten different plans to choose from. Some plans offer more out-of-pocket reductions than others, with plans F, G, and N being among the most extensive.

In order to get Medigap, you have to be signed up for Original Medicare (Parts A and B). The enrollment period lasts six months, beginning the first day you turn 65 while also being enrolled in Part B.

The Medigap Plans

Medigap Plans are split into Medigap Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.

The out-of-pocket costs these plans can potentially cover or significantly reduce are:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part B deductible
  • Part A hospital coinsurance and other hospital-related costs
  • Part A hospice coinsurance or copayment
  • Part A Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Part B excess charges
  • First three pints of blood
  • 80% of foreign emergency travel costs

Medigap Plan F

Medigap Plan F is the only one offering coverage for every category. However, it’s no longer available to those who turned 65 on or after January 1, 2020. No Medigap plans can pay the Part B deductible on the policyholder’s behalf.

Medigap Plan G

Medigap Plan G is for applicants who want to get as much coverage as possible, but did not turn 65 until January 1, 2020, or later. The only thing that Medigap Plan G doesn’t cover is the Medicare Part B deductible.

Medigap Plan N

Medigap Plan N doesn’t cover the Part B deductible or the excess charges. It covers 100% of the Part B coinsurance, with small out-of-pocket Part B copayments.

The difference in your out-of-pocket expenses is not as broad as it seems. Part B excess charges do not apply every time you get a Medicare Part B-covered treatment. You only pay excess charges when you are seeing a non-participating doctor. A non-participating doctor does not accept Medicare assignment but will work with your Medicare plan to negotiate payment. Medicare will pay a certain amount, and you will be charged up to an additional 15% of the bill.

Medigap Plan N covers 100% of your Medicare Part B coinsurance. You will pay copayments for office visits and for treatments you get at the hospital if you are not admitted as an inpatient. For the office visit, your copay could be up to $20, and if you get hospital treatment as an outpatient, your copay could be up to $50.
