Does Medicare Cover Vaccines?

Vaccines help prevent many illnesses or can lessen the chances of contracting a virus. You may need to get some vaccine shots more than once, and you may need to talk to your doctor to know how often. If you need to stay up to date with your vaccines, you may be wondering what your Medicare plan will cover

At Cornerstone Senior Advisors, we have those answers!

What Vaccines Are Covered?

Under Medicare Part B, you can get coverage for several immunizations. Part B covers immunizations such as flu shots, hepatitis B vaccines for high-risk enrollees, pneumonia vaccines, immunizations relating to injury treatment (rabies or tetanus), and other vaccines needed to reduce exposure to certain diseases and conditions.

Medicare Part D also covers vaccines for shingles, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, measles, rubella, and mumps.

Cost

The out-of-pocket expenses for vaccine shots depend on the Medicare part covering the vaccine and the type of vaccine. Under Medicare Part B, you will typically receive full coverage for vaccines as long as your provider accepts Medicare.

As for Part D, your costs may vary by plan and provider. You may have to pay a copayment or coinsurance. The location of where you receive your vaccine can also impact what you pay. If you get the vaccine at a pharmacy, you may end up paying lower costs than if you were to receive a vaccine in a doctor’s office.
