Do I Need Medicare Part B?

Medicare Part B is part of Original Medicare and covers outpatient medical services such as preventive screenings, durable medical equipment, and doctor visits. To enroll in Part B, you must be 65 years old or older or must meet other eligibility requirements if you are under 65.

Part B covers medically necessary outpatient services after you meet the deductible. Once you meet the deductible, Part B will cover 80% of the approved costs while you’ll cover 20% of the costs.

Do You Need Part B?

If you are working and you have a group health plan which serves as creditable coverage, you may delay your Part B enrollment. However, you may need Medicare Part B due to various reasons. For example, in a scenario where Medicare would be considered primary insurance, you will need to enroll in Part B to avoid the late enrollment penalty. Also, if you want to enroll in other parts of Medicare, you will need to enroll in Part B. For example, to enroll in Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement plan, you must be enrolled in both parts of Original Medicare.

What If I Have Another Health Plan? Do I Need Part B?

The answer depends on the type of health insurance you have. If you have a group health plan at a company with less than 20 employees, you will need to enroll in Medicare as soon as you become eligible if you want to avoid late enrollment penalties. However, if your employer has 20 or more employees, you can choose to delay Part B enrollment without penalty. You can still have both forms of coverage, though, to make the most of your coverage.

If you are a veteran and you have VA benefits, you can choose to also enroll in Medicare as keeping both plans will provide substantial health coverage. You can get coverage from VA-approved facilities and Medicare-approved facilities.
